Somaliland electoral commission issues candidacy certificates ahead of November elections

Hargeisa (HOL) — The Somaliland Electoral Commission has officially awarded candidacy certificates to three presidential candidates as preparations for the upcoming elections in November intensify.

President Muse Bihi Abdi, representing the Kulmiye party, along with Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro of the Waddani party and Faisal Ali Warabe from the UCID party, received their certificates at the commission headquarters in Hargeisa on Saturday.

advertisementsThe three main parties, seven political organizations—Kaah, Hilaac, Barwaqa, Rajo, Talo Wadaag, Shacabka, and Horseed—have been authorized to participate in the dual elections scheduled for November 2024.

Political stakeholders in Somaliland have recently agreed to address previous disputes regarding the sequencing of elections for political organizations and the presidential race. President Bihi had advocated for the election of political organizations to take place before the presidential election, a position that met resistance from opposition parties.

Campaigning for the dual elections will commence in October, with candidates from the three major parties vying for the presidency, while leaders from the political organizations will work to amplify their voices and influence in the electoral process.
